Preserving the Legacy of Elgin Watches: Speaking with NAWCC Chicago Chapter 3

Recently, Travis had the honor of presenting to the Chicago Chapter 3 group of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC). The presentation focused on the remarkable history of the Elgin National Watch Company and the lasting impact the company had on American watchmaking.

Founded in 1864, the Elgin National Watch Company quickly became one of the most significant watch manufacturers in the United States. At its peak, the Elgin factory produced millions of watches that were known worldwide for their precision, craftsmanship, and reliability. For generations, Elgin watches helped shape the standard of American horology.

During the presentation, Travis shared the story of how the Elgin watch factory came to be, the incredible scale of the operation, and how the company helped transform the city of Elgin into one of the most important watchmaking centers in the country.

A key part of the discussion also focused on the Elgin Watch Factory Depot.

The depot served as an important transportation hub connected to the watch factory, helping move both materials and finished watches in and out of the city. Over time, the depot became a historic landmark representing the industrial growth and innovation that defined Elgin during the height of its watchmaking era.

Today, preserving that history has become an important mission.

Our family has been deeply involved in the ongoing restoration and preservation efforts surrounding the Elgin Watch Factory Depot. What was once a neglected structure is now being carefully restored with the goal of honoring its historical significance while ensuring it remains part of the community for generations to come.

Sharing the story of Elgin watches with the NAWCC community was a meaningful experience. The NAWCC is made up of passionate collectors, historians, and horology enthusiasts who work tirelessly to preserve the legacy of watchmaking.

Being able to speak with a group that truly understands the importance of this history made the experience especially rewarding.

The story of Elgin watches is more than just the story of a factory. It is the story of innovation, craftsmanship, community, and the people who helped build one of the most respected watch brands in American history.

As restoration efforts continue at the depot, we remain committed to preserving that legacy and ensuring that the history of Elgin watchmaking continues to be shared.
